Tricks and Tips with Miguel Willis

Team Rider Miguel Willis breaks down the BACK TO WRAPPED for YOU!

back2wrapped_1_1.jpg

Overview

A back to wrapped is a heelside 720 backwards rotation landing with your rear hand wrapped behind your back holding the bar.

Steps

Approach the trick with a medium amount of speed and your kite at 45 degrees.

Pop off the water as you would for a normal back roll, leading with your head and your hands level with your chest.

After completing the first rotation and as you are coming down, take your front hand off the bar and continue into the second rotation leaving your rear hand holding the bar in front of you.  Think of it as your body doing two rotations while your rear hand holding the bar only does one.

As you rotate into the landing, twist the bar downwards as this enables your arm to bend and you to bring the bar closer to your hips and lower back.

Land with your head up and your board pointing downwind.   Your back arm should be wrapped behind you.

Pass the bar to your front hand as you ride away.

Tips

Like all wake-style tricks it’s crucial to have a solid pop off the water as this affects the rest of the trick.  Keep your head up, shoulders back and square, flatten off the board a little and head slightly downwind.  Progressively edge the board, building up the tension in your lines so when you launch off the water you are moving towards your kite, slackening the tension on the lines.

The landing is the most difficult part of this trick as the kite pulls at a strange angle. A few things to keep in mind;

·       Make sure the kite is at 45 degrees.  If it’s too high the landing and pass are harder as it’ll be pulling up, too low and you’ll come in fast and hard.

·       Try holding the bar with the center depower rope through your fingers as this will reduce the amount the kite moves through the window.

·        A common problem is under-rotating the board and tripping a rail. Keep your head up when you land and look at where you are going.  It’s natural to look down at where you land but this throws off your balance.  Bending your knees a bit also helps to absorb the landing.

Practice the motion on land to help visualize it.
